Gary Coons: Deputy Opposition Critic for Ferries and Coastal Communities

Gary Coons is the Member of the Legislature representing the North Coast Constituency. It is a large, geographically diverse area stretching from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) to Prince Rupert and North Coast communities, and includes communities along the Central Coast as far south as Rivers Inlet.  He was elected to the Legislature on May 17, 2005 and re-elected as the MLA for the North Coast on May 12, 2009.

Gary was born in Winnepeg, Manitoba but shortly after moved to a small city in Quebec. He and his family then moved to Ontario where he started playing competative hockey and continued to play for the University of Western Ontario. Gary’s dedication and commitment to hockey  landed him some good opportunities but more importantly helped him achieve his degree in Education.  Gary takes pride in his teaching and coaching background because he was able to work with so many people during those years. Gary is married to Lois Elliot, also a teacher and they have two daughters Hannah and Breton. Being teachers, both Gary and Lois have always promoted the importance of an education to their girls.

Gary is an avid outdoorsman and is always out exploring our province; kayaking, zip lining, hiking and snow shoeing.   He loves sports in general but mostly racquet sports and hockey. When not in the Legislature, Gary will be in the stands cheering on the Prince Rupert Rampage hockey team.

Gary takes pride in being your local MLA. He dedicates many of his hours strategizing for his constituents, not only within the North Coast but throughout the province. If you are out and about and would like to talk to Gary, please feel free to approach him or contact the constituency office in Prince Rupert.

    Hello Mr. Coons,
I have read on the internet something about how BC Ferries, since being quasi-privatized, is now carrying a very high debt load, at an interest rate that is excessive. There was something about BC Ferries getting a debenture from the Province. I found it hard to understand. Can you explain this?

    Thank you,
    Hugh Thomas
