Dozens of animal lovers and their furry friends came out to Doug Kerr Field on the morning of September 13 for the 2009 Paws for a Cause, and SPCA branch manager Lindsay Vincent told the crowd gathered after the walk that this year was a resounding success.
“We surpassed our goal and raised $4,300, so I’m really excited about that. Thank you so much, I really can’t say it better than that,” she said.
“It really means a lot to our shelter, and all of the money is going to stay local. You guys did such a great job, I’m just blown away.”
The $4,300 raised this year also surpasses the money raised last year, and it was thanks in part to some of the fundraising prize winners. Morgan was awarded the youth crusader prize for raising $315, while Sandra Cummings had the highest adult fundraising total with $436. Kim Hughes was top female fundraiser with $555, while North Coast MLA Gary Coons was again the top male fundraiser, bringing in $295 for the cause. The 3 Musketeers x 2 were the top team, raising $520, followed by the team of Freckles and Stanley.
Pauline Woodrow won a dog obedience session with Jan Palmer for her short essay about the exploits of Tika, who welcomed the family home with chewed up holey-shoes and a chewed up bath mat- while the basket of chew toys in the living room remained untouched.
The dogs were also awarded for different categories, with Freckles winning best trick with a roll-over. And the prizes for biggest dog and smallest dog really showed the diversity of this year’s participants: Rosie won biggest dog at 120 pounds while Ace won the smallest dog at just four pounds.
